“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common.”
Acts 2:42-47
Lutheran Mission – Australia welcomes all Confessional Lutherans who ascribe to our Confessional Statement to join us.
Lutheran Mission-Australia (LM-A) exists to serve congregations, pastors, and members who wish to continue their Lutheran tradition of full reliance on God’s word. From this foundation, we seek to witness the full Gospel of repentance, forgiveness, and eternal life.
Our doctrines and teaching are expressed in our Confessional Statement which reflects our unconditional subscription to the Book of Concord and our continued commitment to the unaltered Theses of Agreement. LM-A members are expected to commit to this confessional statement either through their congregation.
Working towards a Synod
God has blessed LM-A. We have an increasing number of new congregations working towards becoming formally constituted. More congregations will be established or join us in the next few months. We are moving rapidly through the interim phase towards the establishment of a Synod.
Our constitution states that at this first Convention of Synod, all individual memberships of LM-A cease, and all members must then align their commitment to LM-A through membership of a congregation. The President and directors of LM-A believe that the interest of individual members is best served through an LM-A congregation.
As there is now a reasonable spread of LM-A congregations across Australia, we believe that now is the time for all individuals to join an LM-A congregation. There they can both serve and be served in a personal manner.
How to become a member
Individual memberships will no longer be available.
If you are located near one of our LM-A congregations, we encourage you to contact that congregation and ask to become a member. They will provide you with a short form to complete. You can find a list of all our congregations here.
If you are a member of a congregation which is working towards becoming a member congregation of LM-A, we encourage you to remain with your current congregation. Once the congregation becomes a part of LM-A, your membership will be transferred to LM-A.
If you do not live near an LM-A congregation or group working towards becoming a congregation, LM-A has established St Paul’s Lutheran Mission Circuit, a non-geographical congregation to which you can belong. This will provide the best option for pastoral care of those unable to regularly travel to a LM-A congregation. We will endeavour to provide members of this congregation with occasional in-person, word-and-sacrament ministry via an assigned pastor. If you would like to join St Paul’s Lutheran Mission Circuit, please contact Pastor Martin Scharnke at martinscharnke@lutheranmissionaustralia.org.au
Our Constitution
LM-A is a public company limited by guarantee. While this structure perhaps seems a little legalistic and un-churchlike, it is considered the most appropriate structure for a body such as LM-A. Those wishing to join LM-A should familiarize themselves with our constitution, which sets out both the establishment and on-going operation of LM-A.
