Dwelling in Unity

Behold, how good and pleasant it is
when brothers dwell in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head,
    running down on the beard,
on the beard of Aaron,
running down on the collar of his robes!
It is like the dew of Hermon,
which falls on the mountains of Zion!
For there the Lord has commanded the blessing,
    life forevermore. (Psalm 133)

In the midst of the sadness of the LCA’s decision to abandon apostolic teaching regarding ordination, it’s been wonderful to witness the confessional unity that has been expressed by those who cannot abide by this decision. While everyone is still working out what this means for them personally, LM-A has been privileged to hear from many, many people whose love for God’s Word and steadfast commitment to the truth is clear to see. The joy that comes from such unity is well expressed by the psalmist and is something which we pray will rise from the mess which currently confronts us.

Next week I will have the joy of experiencing that unity in a different context. I am travelling to Wittenberg to meet with all those churches who partner with the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod as I attend their International Church Relations Conference. LM-A has been invited to be a part of this gathering as we seek the friendship and support of confessional brothers and sisters around the world.

Following the LCMS gathering, there will be a meeting of the International Lutheran Council which LM-A has also been invited to attend. We believe these relationships are vital for the sake of encouragement and confessional accountability, especially in our isolated corner of the world. As we work toward becoming a synodical body it is important that we be open to the wisdom and counsel of trusted friends who have walked the same path and have much to offer.

Back here in Australia, however, I realise the turmoil you are all facing will likely continue for now. I want to encourage you to continue reaching out to LM-A as you work through the implications of the LCA’s decision. Please let us know how we can help. I also want to encourage you with the knowledge that we are working on the establishment of congregations in response to the requests we are receiving. This will take time but work is underway.

I understand there is a great deal of grief and anxiety for many people, and a sense of helplessness that seems all consuming as your conscience is assaulted by decisions that are outside your control. We typically long for things to be black and white and yet at this time, it seems the whole world is a murky kind of grey. Remember that you are not charged with sorting this out yourself. In addition to those who stand with you in confessional unity, the more important reality is that the Lord is with you and invites you to:

Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matt 11:28-30)

The peace of the Lord be with you always,

Pastor Matt Anker
